What Is the Key Issue in This Election?

If the election were tomorrow, what key issue would determine how you vote? The economy? Foreign policy? How about abortion?

"Vote women's lives, health and justice" reads a new sign just put up by one of the local abortionists who has been decimating the black population of Fort Lauderdale-his primary clientele-for decades. He apparently hopes his new blood-red sign will win votes on November 6 for candidates who support abortion.

It's clear he doesn't see the irony of the color of his sign. Perhaps the seared conscience that permits him to continue his grisly work also prevents him from seeing the irony in his advertising.

There was equal irony in the fact that George Tiller, who performed abortions after 21 weeks gestation, served as an usher in an Evangelical Lutheran Church in America congregation until he was shot in the church foyer in 2009.

The fact that he was shot by someone who claimed he did it to "save pre-born babies" is not ironic. It is completely unjustifiable. Furthermore, that act has been used by the pro-abortion lobby and media to tarnish the efforts of all those who stand for life and use legitimate and legal means to end the killing of babies.

This was brought home to me recently when I happened to catch an episode about the killing of an abortionist on the TV show Law & Order: Criminal Intent.

Initially the suspected killer was linked with a radical who was quoted saying, "the Lord wants us to pick up the sword and kill more abortionists." But as detective Goren probed the psychological profile of the suspect, a personal motive was revealed.

A number of years before, his fiancé had aborted their baby after he took her to court to prevent her from having an abortion. She told Goren, "It was as if what was inside of me was more important than I was."

Goren deduced from this that the judge, who had ruled that the fiancé had the right to abort their baby, regardless of the father's protestations, would be the suspect's next target. He and his fellow detective Eames took the man into custody just as he was about to shoot the judge, using a sniper rifle.

As the perpetrator was being taken away, Eames said, "Tell the judge we're all clear…until the next one," implying that the anti-abortion movement is full of those who would use violence to promote their cause.

But once again, irony abounds. In same episode Eames asks the prosecutor, "Do you really believe abortion is murder?" indicating her doubts. We would ask, "If the premeditated taking of the life of an innocent person-the unborn-is not murder, what is?"

When Tiller was shot, former Planned Parenthood president Gloria Feldt wrote an impassioned article for Salon (6/1/2009), stating, "The doctor's murder is domestic terrorism, and if our leaders don't act boldly, there will be more violence." She called upon President Obama to "make a speech that addresses women's moral right to reproductive self-determination," and stressed that "The change we need in our culture's attitudes toward women's reproductive justice has to happen both top-down and bottom-up.

Feldt's article contains all the talking points that the pro-abortion lobby and media are now advancing. She called for "justice" for women, while ignoring the injustice that continues to be carried out against the innocent unborn. She decried the murder of an abortionist (the only one since 1998) while ignoring the murder of more than 55 million babies since 1973. And she categorized the incident as "domestic terrorism," claiming that there will be more violence by implying that the shooter was part of a conspiracy-this despite the clear disavowal of the use of violence by every pro-life organization in America.

Perhaps the abortionist in Fort Lauderdale feels the need to do some political lobbying because his own business is down. With 12 hour prayer vigils taking place in front of his center during the current 40 Days for Life campaign, there are already several reports of women leaving the location and deciding to keep their babies. Others coming out of the place have told vigil volunteers standing on the sidewalk peacefully praying, "That is not a healthy place," and even "It felt evil in there."

The blood-red sign, "Vote women's life, health and justice," will not persuade those who know the truth: suicide rates among post-abortive women are six times higher within the first year; 31 percent of women who have abortions have health problems afterwards; and there is no "justice" for the babies who enter abortion facilities in the wombs of their mothers.

A Kansas jury deliberated for 37 minutes before convicting Scott Roeder of the murder of George Tiller. That's about four times longer than it takes to perform the average surgical abortion.

There is no justification for any form of violence in the fight against abortion. And we should remember that our "fight" is primarily a spiritual one. But if we believe in the sanctity of life at every age and stage, then there is no justification for the violence against the unborn that takes place every day across our nation either.

What is the primary issue in this election? Foreign policy? The economy? If the lives of the future generations of America's children are our greatest treasure, then we should clearly vote for those who have pledged to protect them.
