Windows Phone Mango Unveiled in Japan, Will it Give Apple, Android a Run for Their Money?

Microsoft announced Tuesday morning that its latest Windows Phone mobile operating system, code-named "Mango," was officially finalized and released for manufacturing.

Manufacturers should begin testing the new OS on their devices. What now remains, according to Terry Myerson, Microsoft's corporate vice president of engineering for the Windows Phone, " marks the point in the development process where we hand code to our handset and mobile-operator partners to optimize Mango for their specific phone and network configurations."

This new version, an update to Microsoft's Windows Phone 7 (WP7) platform, will feature the highly anticipated multitasking app, a swifter web browsing capability on Internet Explorer 9, better email, and an enhanced communication functionality that ties text, IM, and Facebook chat unto one conversation.

In total, Microsoft has announced that Mango has over 500 new features that make it a major update to its previous platform. According to Sascha Segan of PCMag.com, this new version of the WP7 "is fun to use," and has “full features that make it easier to keep in touch with friends and family," and its "easier to use than Android and slicer than the iOS."

Other websites are giving Mango a good review by writing "it'll give Apple and the Android a run for their money."

This move by Microsoft heavily supports the previous rumor that the much anticipated platform may be available to consumers by September in various handsets from Acer, Fujitsu, ZTE, Samsung, and Nokia.
