Winter Hits Denver; Sunday Night Football Canceled?

Recent weather reports for Denver have taken a sudden wintry turn and could affect this week’s NFL game.

The Weather Channel reports that “Winter is coming to Denver,” and adds, “Record highs yesterday and a snowstorm tomorrow? It’s going to be a wild week in the Denver area as the winter weather invades.”

The snowfall in Denver so far has reportedly snapped tree limbs and pulled down power lines. The 10 inches of wet, heavy snow that fell overnight Tuesday has especially affected areas north of the city, which has current temperatures around 33 degrees Fahrenheit.

The Detroit Lions are scheduled to arrive in the city to face the Broncos on Sunday.

Luckily , Denver’s forecast calls for snow Wednesday and sunny skies for the remainder of the week. The isolated snowfall should not cause any issues with the football field, and the game should commence as scheduled.

The Lions’ quarterback, Matthew Stafford, could afford an inclement weather cancellation this week - he sprained his right ankle during last week’s game against the Atlanta Falcons.

Speaking to the Detroit Free Press, Stafford said, “I think every competitor plans on playing,” but adds doubts that he will be able to participate in the matchup against the Broncos Sunday.

“We’ll see if that comes true. I’ve got to keep getting better to get there, but I want to, obviously,” said the quarterback.

Stafford, 23, said his sprain is “in a weird spot,” and the Detroit newspaper reported that the injury is being treated with high hopes of healing by Sunday.

Stafford will face Bronco’s quarterback Tim Tebow, who became an overnight sensation last week. The Denver Post reported that sales of his number 15 jersey were on the rise following the game against Florida.

Denver’s taste of winter comes as President Barack Obama visits the state along his campaign trail.

The same snow storm has touched down in Utah and Wyoming, where it shut down main highways between Laramie and Cheyenne.
