In the film Christian Bale reprises his role as Batman, Anne Hathaway appears as Catwoman, and Joseph Gordon-Levitt plays Bane.

Bane actually appeared in one other movie featuring the caped crusader, the 1997 film "Batman & Robin." However, many big-time fans of the comics felt his character was stripped of depth and intelligence in that film.

The trailer for “The Dark Knight Rises” was released over the summer and reveals Batman’s return. “Every hero has a journey, every journey has an end,” is the trailer’s tagline. Then, Liam Neeson's voice can be heard saying, "If you make yourself more than just a man, if you devote yourself to an ideal, then you become something else entirely, a legend, Mr. Wayne, a legend."

The clip goes on to show Bane and Batman, but does not show Anne Hathaway as Catwoman.

Bane is the main enemy for the new Batman movie, although many casual comic book fans, have not heard of him before. Bane is less prominently featured in Batman stories than The Joker, The Penguin, Mr. Freeze, and Two-Face. However, to serious comic book fans, Bane is seen as a highly intriguing villain and one of the most successful rivals of Batman.

Comic book fans anticipate that Nolan will restore Bane to his former glory through his new film, portraying him not just as a thug with super strength but as a formidable opponent to Batman who is both strong and intelligent.

Unlike most villains, Bane is not motivated by base criminal desires like The Joker or The Penguin. Instead, he's a purist who is out to prove himself and search for meaning in life.

The Dark Knight Rises is set for release July 20, 2012.
