Kristi Noem

In an announcement published on Nov. 13, Trump announced his selection of South Dakota’s Republican Gov. Kristi Noem to serve as secretary of Homeland Security. Noem was first elected to her state’s sole seat in the U.S. House of Representatives in 2010, serving four terms. She decided not to seek a fifth term, instead opting to run for the Republican nomination for governor. She won the nomination and the governorship in the 2018 election, securing reelection four years later.

Trump praised Noem as “very strong on border security,” identifying her as “the first Governor to send National Guard troops to help Texas fight the Biden Border Crisis.”

If Noem is confirmed by the Senate, Lt. Gov. Larry Rhoden would assume the governorship of South Dakota for the remainder of Noem’s term.
